Literary Engagement:
#HMS Students read selected excerpts from The Martian to stimulate critical thinking and explore themes related to space exploration and sustainability.
Math Engagement:
In math class (Ms. Melton and Mrs. Taylor) students had to make a brochure making their own planet. Students made Zeeek the alien and had to show their alien around Shelbyville and honed in on 9 standards.
Practical Experimentation:
Hands-on activities included planting potato plants and monitoring their growth, simulating the challenges of cultivating food in extraterrestrial environments.
Innovative Engineering:
Students designed and constructed student-made "space probes," which were then put to the test. The Shelbyville Electric Department graciously conducted a drop test to assess whether the payload would survive the impact.
Community Partnership:
We extend our gratitude to the Shelbyville-Bedford Partnership for their generous contribution in providing the novels used in this project, greatly enhancing the educational experience.
This comprehensive project not only enriched students' understanding of science and engineering principles but also highlighted the importance of community collaboration in education.
