BCLA Welcomes Our New SRO

My name is Officer Jose Ramirez, and I’ve been in law enforcement for the last 10 years. In 2006-10, I started my law career as a corrections officer working for Bedford County Sheriff's Office. In August 2023, I became an SRO at BCLA.

I worked for 5 years as a drug enforcement agent with the 17th Judicial District Drug Task Force. There I investigated drug trafficking, drug dealing, and criminal organizations involved in the drug trade. I was promoted to the Lewisburg Police Department and worked 5 years as a violent crime detective where I investigated most general crimes like robberies, overdose, school threats, and vandalism. Afterwards, I escalated to more serious crimes like aggravated assaults, child abuse, crimes against children, sex crimes, and murders. Before my law enforcement career, I was a security guard at a warehouse during the day and a bouncer at a nightclub. I decided to become an SRO to maintain my mental health; therefore, I wanted to take a step back from violent crime cases.

My favorite thing about being an SRO is working every day with students. I can help them become better adults in the future and hopefully better citizens in our community. I’ve learned that every successful student is a member of society who can contribute some positivity.

I am a clear example of someone who made wrong choices but learns from them. Because of my involvement with gangs, I dropped out of school at the age of 16. I should have ended up in jail with a criminal record. My love and admiration for my parents, who did so much for me and my 4 siblings, motivated me to show them that their struggles were not in vain. I felt like if I had ended up a criminal that their efforts would have been for nothing. I obtained my GED and later a bachelor's degree in criminal justice.

I was born and raised in Chicago, IL. I frequently visit there to my family and friends. My favorite teams are all from Chicago like the Bears, Bulls, & White Sox. My favorite foods are a lot. LOL. I really enjoy Japanese, Chinese, and Mediterranean food. Most of all, I like Mexican food.
